The second Riding Off the Map continues on the West Coast and features one the region ’ s most unique and interesting tracks – Napoleon Hill . While this track may need no introduction to some , it is one of the most asked about West Coast tracks .

This is a fantastic track which makes its way through one of the earliest established gold mining areas on the West Coast . Dating back to the 1860s , Napoleon Hill is rich in mining history with tales of triumph and success , through to hardship and a devastating fire that saw almost the entire town burn to the ground . Since the track is directional , the starting point is at Napoleon Hill . Refer to the included map for the start and end point .

TERRAIN AND GRADING The track offers a variety of different terrain . There are easy Grade 1 and 2 sections that allow you to relax , swing your head , and take in the stunning West Coast scenery . At the other end of the scale are a handful of Grade 4 sections that demand your full attention as you tackle steep descents over loose rocks , clay , and deep rain ruts .
The water section which follows Nobles Creek is winding and fun to ride , with excellent traction on pebble-sized stones as you crisscross Nobles Creek multiple times . However , exiting via Waipuna Creek presents more of a challenge regarding traction . The small to medium-sized rocks are subject to algae buildup which can make them extremely slippery . If you head in a few days after heavy rain , most of the algae will be washed off the rocks , offering far better traction .
EXTRA OPTIONS If you are looking to extend your ride time in the area and you enjoy challenging tracks , you ’ re in luck . An extra loop , called Mosquito Creek Track , can be added . This 9km Grade 5 track ties in nicely with the directional flow of the Napoleon Hill track ( see the map ).
