FREEZE! REGO PROTEST STARTS TO BITE

MAGNZ cites more than 17,000 more motorcycles are‘ on hold’ than at the same time last year. NZTA’ s own recent data suggests that the protest is having a significant effect on

registrations being places on exemption( or ' hold ' as we call it) and that makes a difference when the dollars are counted. That 17,000 represents around 20 percent, that is a massive proportion. And then there are the bikes on shorter rego than the traditional yearly thing many just did. The effect of the data, obtained via Official Information Act request, is roughly estimated to be $ 3.5-9million in‘ lost’ revenue. The latest data reveals much more than the earlier data suggested and we will follow with interest the outcomes of the registration protest. As MAGNZ says, it is not protesting about paying our way, it is merely about fairness and transparency. MAGNZ is not encouraging noncompliance, it is non-partisan and this is not a political campaign for any party. MAGNZ is getting the attention of some in the political realm as well, motorcyclists are voters and that new registration cost, particularly as we tend to often have more than one motorcycle, hurts. We will keep you posted on progress.

MOTOGP KIWI CREW CHIEF PAUL TREVATHAN

After KTM ' s run of the bike cutting out in the last few races, Pedro Acosta ' s Crew Chief, Paul Trevathan, assures us they " have a work around in place ". Acosta ' s bike cut out three times at the Assen round. And then there was the cut out which caused the huge accident at the Catalan GP, where Alex Marquez ran into Acosta and sustained serious injuries. Trevathan also told Kiwi Rider that Acosta was undergoing minor surgery on his right wrist to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, not the more common motorcycle racing condition known as arm pump( chronic exertional compartment syndrome). Acosta should be mostly healed for the German GP on July 10-12.
