start a timer . The rider can cancel this if they are ok , simply by tapping the cancel button on their phone or by saying “ Cancel ”. If no cancel command is given , the Packtalk Pro will access your phone ’ s GPS location and send a text message to your predetermined emergency contact with your location . Of course , this does rely on you crashing in an area with cellphone reception , however I really rate Cardo for thinking about the safety of motorcyclists . The way the algorithm is programmed helps mitigate false alarms . The unit is constantly measuring your movement . A very specific set of criteria needs to be met to trigger an alarm . Essentially , normal movement of someone riding , followed by a large impact , then stillness . If this specific criteria is not met , the Cardo will just continue as normal . It just so happens I have an old helmet that ’ s past its prime , so I attached my Cardo Packtalk Pro and did some testing . I carried the helmet around for 10 minutes , then dropped it on the ground from my normal standing height . Within three minutes my emergency contact received a text with my location . This worked well in my garage , but I ’ ll come straight out and say , that this should not replace a PLB . If you are heading bush or to an area known to have dodgy cell signal , a system that does not rely on reception is always going to be the better option , but redundancy is brilliant . in your chosen set of ear buds via the standard 3.5mm headphone jack . Apart from the Auto on / off function , the experience of using the Packtalk Pro is exactly the same as the Edge , Neo and Custom . But If you are currently running a Packtalk Edge , Neo or Custom . I genuinely don ’ t think you need to rush to upgrade to the Pro . Unless you specifically desire the Auto On / Off and crash detection features . It ’ s a nice to have additional safety feature , but it is a bit pricy at $ 899 for a single unit .
USING THE PACKTALK PRO I ‘ installed ’ the Packtalk Pro on my Airoh Commander ... which wasn ’ t really installing as I already had a mount and speakers on the helmet . So , it just clicked in with the magnets . Because all Cardo ’ s products are IP67 rated they can be used in most conditions ; ADV , trail riding , commuting , touring , it doesn ’ t matter . Having commuted for many years , it ’ s normal for me to listen to music , podcasts or the radio while riding . The 45mm JBL speakers are installed in the helmet ( rather than being earbuds ), so I find I can still hear whats going on around me . There is more than enough volume for it to be heard clearly if wearing earplugs . If you prefer to use silicon ear buds or molded IEMs then you can easily remove the 45mm speakers and plug
