for the hardcore enthusiasts – the likes of BSA Bruce, a regular from Palmerston North, and Tony( Bungy) Dalbeth from the far North. Even Mr Crazy Shirt, Peter Ploen, and family, camped up with a bunch of party animal friends of Brendon’ s, the track builder. Expecting a larger turnout on the Sunday, we were asked to add the Farmer’ s Invitation race because not all modern bikers were over the age of 60. Unlike modern MX tracks, we ride what we are given, so, from rain soaked to dusty soil is just like the old days of Scrambles meets. It’ s up to the individual to seed themselves accordingly as we still have some very competitive oldies. Lots of riders just let the fast ones go, starting at the back to avoid the first turn turmoil. Track markers are the safe, plastic foldables, but we do encourage the riders to go around them, not at them. The club tries to get four meets in before the end of each year, starting in September, then four in the New Year from February onwards. Club membership is $ 30 for the year and it’ s $ 40 to ride as many classes as your bike( s) can fit in. Casual riders are $ 50, and it’ s $ 10 for the kid’ s class with a paying adult. It is all a lot of fun with the camaraderie and banter starting well before the race days with the Auckland Classic Scramble Club’ s Facebook page comments. So, if your dad or even grandad has an old dirt bike that needs a good skid, or maybe just a day out, come on out and spend a day with the Good Old Boys.
