styled bike… modelled on its larger 600 and
one-litre cousins.
Both pilot and passenger were wearing
T-shirts and shorts, and while the passenger
had sneakers on the pilot was happily
shifting gears and braking in jandals. But
hey, they were both wearing helmets so no
laws broken.
Except the law of common sense.
Sometimes I hear myself suggesting it
would be just desserts for the pair if they
were to encounter something which caused
the bike to go down… but that’s not good
form. I just hope someone, somewhere, one
day suggests they don slightly more than
beachwear when they take the bike out for
a scoot.
Mind you, the lesson learnt from having a
quick cuddle with the road surface when
poorly attired is a firm one. It was for me in
one long-passed summer when a light shirt
and cotton strides were no match for the
bitumen when a hard-braking attempt went
all wrong.
“Got the scars to prove it,” is a very
common line with we who, it has to be said,
never took that under-attired path again.
Much better getting a slight sweat on
than having 17 stitches put in and knowing
you were missing the final episode of
Hawaii Five-O. And while explaining to your
workmates what happened, they go, “T hat’s
just plain stupid”. It’s called learning the
hard way kids, and believe me, you do.
Ironically, I’ve seen some people piloting
those atrocious electric scooter things
wearing more kit than some I’ve seen riding
petrol-powered ones.
Hey, if it heats up and the road ahead
beckons, please kit up… properly.
