It was the first time in
eight years… that such a
massive supercross event
had been offered to New
Zealand audiences
hat’s the short story... here’s the long
story...
t was the first time in eight years
since orth Harbour tadium hosted
international su ercross in
that
such a massive su ercross event had been
offered to ew ealand audiences and so
the e citement and fi at t mart tadium
was al able.
hanks to ustralian com any
anagement ty td, in collaboration with
otorcycling ew ealand, and credit to a
cou le of men by the name of illiams
illiams vent anagement com any boss
evin illiams and the man who is both
and ceania resident, anawatu s
len illiams
ew ealand race fans were
in store for a real treat.
ut then heavy rain arrived and it all looked
uite uncertain.
he whole thing might never have
ha ened had it not been for a tenacious
crew of track workers, who transformed the
rain-drenched stadium from a muddy mess
to a ristine su ercross track in ust a few
hours.
he track crew which included a large
number of iwis worked wonders to drain
the course, scra e mud from the front
start straight and resha e several corners
ready for what turned into a s ectacular
night of thrilling race action, all lit u with
yrotechnics ote ith these guys on the
ob, the ransmission ulley road works or
Huntly by ass could robably be knocked
out in a weekend .
nd that was ust as well because, starved
of such huge international motorcycling
s ectacles such as this, the ew ealand
ublic had res onded to what was being
offered and more than ,
had lonked
down their hard-earned cash for tickets
and filled the enrose stadium almost to
ca acity.
here were no iwis in the main
class
although ay of lenty s en ownley did
erform, kidding around with merican
motocross clown onnie ac in a short,
stage-managed, one-on-one battle .
ith ceania ride at stake, it s ust as well
then that ustralian rider eed won the
night... erish the thought that a cotsman
ean ilson or any of the merican riders
entered would win the ceania tro hy.
