One thing that is needed is some protective film / tape underneath the base to stop the bodywork being abraded and scratched by dirt getting underneath . The 3M tape that people use is a little rich for my blood , so at the moment I ’ m just using the book protection film that you can get from Warehouse . It ’ s not a permanent solution , so I apply it before each ride I use luggage . It ’ s cheap enough , so I ’ m happy to continue doing that for now .
HOT TOPIC I ’ ve ridden a two day gravel and dirt ride on this set-up including a fair bit of slow work , and I ’ ve not experienced any heat issues caused by the stock silencer , which is a common complaint for 690 / 701 owners . There ’ s a decent air gap between the silencer and the side panel , and , perhaps , the foam material of the OS-Base doesn ’ t transmit heat through to the luggage , whatever the reason , so far I ’ ve not had any overheating panel or luggage issues so far ( your mileage may vary ...). If needed I have some reflective aluminium tape I could apply to the wheel / under side of the panel , but I ’ m not sure how well it ’ d stick to the panel . If it comes to it , I ’ ll try it .
