flowing with little traffic . Kumeu onwards is where things become more monotonous with heavier traffic and frequent lane splitting . However , the Gold Star is well balanced and manoeuvring through traffic is effortless . The brakes are responsive , the clutch is light , and the seat is comfortable , making this 30mins + easy . My previous bike was a second-hand Triumph 1200XE Scrambler , on which I did 50,000 plus kilometres over 30 months . While it was an excellent machine loaded with every conceivable technology , I only utilised about 35 % of its capabilities . An old injury affecting my ability to mount taller bikes ultimately led to its sale , pushing me towards a lower-seated option where I could use more of the bike ’ s potential . While the BSA Gold Star may not match the XE ’ s specifications or finish , it comes in at less than half the price . More importantly , I ’ m using 85 %+ of its technology and capability . It ticks many crucial boxes for me . I like the price , retroclassic look , smooth engine , comfortable seat , it ’ s easy to service and there ’ s only one rider aid - ABS . I ’ m not so keen on the tubed tyres , lack of accessories , no option for a centrestand and the chain and exhaust are on the same side of the bike , making chain maintenance difficult . The 650 Gold Star is full of character and proves you don ’ t have to spend a lot of money to get a great riding experience . LLOYD BROWN
