Then it was ‘just’ a matter of retrofitting the
Honda CRF motor into the KTM 85 chassis.
The whole frame had to be cut open to fit this
Honda engine, which is almost twice the size
of the tiny KTM two-stroke power-plant. It took
a lot of jiggling around but we finally got the
engine mounted in the right place, and once
the engine was mounted where we wanted it,
there was the matter of getting the fuel tank
to fit over the head – the four-stroke motor
is much taller than the two-stroke. Unlike the
original bike, the fuel tank now runs with a
reserve tap to give us a chance to get it back
to the pits during a race. The exhaust header
pipe is a custom job that I designed myself
and a mate TIG’d it all together for me. The Pro
Circuit muffler was off the original CRF100F.
To make it look a bit more flash, it’s got new
2018 shape plastics for that bit of bling. The
seat was made taller by Roger at Dr Trim with
the gripper seat cover fitted.
