What surprised me most was how enjoyable the KLE500 SE turned out to be. I expected a sensible commuter dressed up to look adventurous. Instead, I found a motorcycle that’ s genuinely entertaining on winding roads, comfortable enough for touring, confidenceinspiring around town and capable enough to encourage exploring the occasional gravel road without hesitation. No, it isn’ t designed to replace a dedicated off-road bike, and Kawasaki has never claimed that it would. What it does offer is an honest, versatile package that suits the way many riders actually use an adventure bike. Ride to work during the week, disappear into the countryside on the weekend and take the scenic gravel road home when the opportunity presents itself.
THE SKINNY For a first effort in this growing middleweight adventure segment, Kawasaki has judged the market well. The KLE500 SE fills a gap that has existed for years, and after spending time with it, I think it’ s a bike plenty of riders have been waiting for. I’ m keen to spend even more time aboard and see how it stacks up over the longer haul.
