Dealer Principles Sam Green and Ryan Hodgson looked after everyone with breakfasts each day and used their local contacts to gain access to the special farm loops that would otherwise be off limits. Ryan took the more adventurous riders through the Ahipara sand dunes and coastal rocks which turned out to be an adventure in itself when the lone XR650 drowned in a deep puddle. The use of their shop washing facilities was a huge bonus to those of us who trailered or vanned their bikes home. Thanks Northland Honda.
nimble CRF300 models, although there was also a mix of XR models, TransAlps, and Africa Twins ranging from lightweight machines through to larger-capacity adventure bikes. One particularly notable machine was the highly modified CRF450L set-up by GM Nick Snelling. Equipped with a large fuel tank and an impressive collection of adventure gear and accessories, the bike looked purpose-built for the event. It handled the conditions extremely well and quickly became one of the standout machines on the ride. Especially as it contains a version of the race bred CRF 450cc motor. By the end of the third day, bikes were covered in road grime and farm mud. Bodies were stretched yet riders were grinning from ear to ear. The Northern Explorer had delivered exactly what an adventure ride should— great scenery, unpredictable challenges, excellent riding, and the sort of stories that riders would still be talking about long after the event had finished. For anyone who enjoys adventure motorcycling, the Northern Explorer proved once again that Northland offers some of the finest riding country in New Zealand. And even more exciting, Honda tells us that in late March 2027, Nelson will be the venue for the next Honda True Adventure Ride. We can’ t wait.
