Kiwi Rider September 2024 Vol.2 | Page 28

HIGHLIGHTS This is hands-down one of the best adventure routes on the West Coast . It delivers amazing views , brilliant riding terrain , and a true West Coast experience . To top it off , there are half a dozen great sidetracks ranging from Grade 2 to Grade 5 . By including all the sidetracks , you can easily spend a full day or more in the area and be entertained every minute you ’ re there . Check out the included map to see how you ’ re spoiled for choice .
WHO THE ROUTE IS FOR This isn ’ t an easy route . It is best suited to experienced adventure riders who thrive on a challenge , and enjoy riding through native bush . It ’ s not really a solo-friendly route . While it is possible to ride this route solo , and many riders do , the challenging terrain , mixed with the remoteness means it ’ s better suited to a group ride . Aside from the benefit of good riding company and general support if you need it , if the Mackley River is running high you ’ ll be glad to have some helping hands to get your bike across .
ACCOMMODATION While there isn ’ t accommodation along the
route , there are options at either end of the track . On the coastal western side you are just 15 minutes away from Westport which offers numerous accommodation options including AirBnBs , motels , and a holiday park . On the eastern end you are just five minutes away from Lyell Campsite which is a great little DOC camping spot [ just be aware of the sandflies at Lyell - Ed ].
This route is one of over 1000 adventure routes featured on the Adventure Guide map ( both online and in the purpose built Adventure Guide Navigator phone app ) – along with hundreds of motorbike accessible campsites , huts , points of interest , and fuel stations .
