REVIEW

LEATT 5.5 BOOTS

WORDS & PHOTO : Liam Calley

My first impressions when switching to the Leatt 5.5 enduro boots was how comfortable they are straight off the shelf compared to other top of the line boots where you often have a break in period and they take some time to loosen up and feel tailored to your feet . When you look at the pivot system on these boots it is impressive in appearance and how it operates . The 5.5 FlexLock boots incorporate Leatt ’ s FlexLock system which is claimed to reduce forces to the ankle by up to 37 % and the knee by up to 35 % by locking out the ankle movement when over-flexed , which always gives me a lot of confidence to send a jump and not have to worry too much about the consequences of possibly over-extending a foot . The system can be adjusted to the stiffness you prefer with different spacers . I prefer the original set-up which gives a decent amount of flexibility in the ankle but with the support for big hits . Compared to other boots on the market , these have quite a low profile and wide toebox which can suit many different foot shapes . The toes of the boots don ’ t have a steel cap like some on the market which is more prone to wearing but I prefer not having one as I get more feel when changing gear . The 5.5 Flexlock boots are Leatt ’ s top of the range boot and come in at $ 850 , which makes them on the expensive side of things , but competitive compared to other high boots . The way I ’ d describe my Leatt 5.5 boots is they ’ re like wearing your favourite slippers , but ones that can take some serious knocks .
