Evocatively nicknamed the ‘ Scalpel ’ by KTM , the 890 Duke is a weapon . Our test machine this issue is the base model , not the top-spec R version , but in reality it only has an ever so slightly duller edge . It is still light , sharp steering and powerful . In fact , the most powerful in its class . Add in a compact design and better agility than many 600s and the Scalpel moniker seems to be well applied . As a mid-sized naked street-fighter it is hard

to argue that the Duke is not top of the pile . When you mix a thoroughly modern , powerful parallel twin of 889cc with a taut chassis , a dry weight of 169kg and high-quality WP suspension with a sharp 24-degree steering head angle – a road carving scalpel will be the result . The fuel tank only holds 14 litres which keeps overall weight down , but does limit range . But , for all that it is still a pleasant everyday ride and a reasonably practical commuter .
