ROAD TEST HERE
The ‘ busa is doing well on fuel , with the light coming on at 280km . We cruise into Twizel with 342km on the clock and a displayed 14km of remaining range . 18.8 litres of super unleaded tops it up , meaning there ’ s roughly 1.2 litres of fuel left in the tank . An average of 5.5l / 100km for the tank , so it would run out at roughly 364km . Not bad at all for what is possibly the fastest accelerating production bike on the planet .
DAY FOUR Twizel to Okuku 351km Waking up to a chilly six degrees , the battery lights for my Ixon heated gloves are green for go on the charger . Luggage loaded and a crisp , sunny day , I take a hearty breakfast to ward off the chill at the Musterers Hut . It ’ s a decent feed , and a good coffee too . Out of Twizel the highway patrol car I ’ m following thankfully turns right . I point the might of the Hayabusa left and north towards Mt Cook . We only get about 100m before the road is covered in steaming shit . The local station is moving cattle along the state highway , and much of it is getting on the bike , I ’ m not looking forward to cleaning it . It ’ s the big , open roads like this where the
