Metzeler Karoo , and despite the excellent response it provided at these speeds on paved surfaces . I would not feel comfortable at all with the Scrambler X on anything other than hard packed dirt , and even then , I ’ d advise against leaving any dirt road not well travelled . It ’ s not just this Scrambler , it ’ s all of them . Ruts , mud , and sand are a definitive no go . It will not be mounting dunes any time soon , not unless our very own Chris Birch is riding it . On the road it has plenty of grip , but start pushing in the corners , and you ’ ll quickly notice the surface area lost in the compromise of those dual-purpose tyres , and of the relatively bulky frame . It ’ s definitely not a sports bike , and it cannot be ridden as one , look at the Speed 400 if that ’ s your thing .
THE SKINNY Coming in at just over $ 9000 ($ 8995 plus on roads ) the Triumph Scrambler 400X is pretty damn good bang for your buck . It ’ s the best scrambler I ’ ve ridden . If you want a stylish and capable ride , one that allows you to enjoy a countryside ride in comfort , as well as mount the occasional curb and tear up a gravel road , I wouldn ’ t look far past the Scrambler 400X .
