If you’ re anything like me with bikes from different eras and disciplines, you’ ll find yourself with multiple different battery technologies powering the fleet. Some road bikes run AGM( my Aprilia) or Gel, some run Lead Acid( my R80GS), while dirt bikes and sportsbikes are now commonly fitted with Lithium batteries to save space and weight. Keeping them all charged when some aren’ t regularly ridden is almost painful- I often find myself wanting to go for a ride only to find the bike I want to take has a flat battery. Convergence in technologies can be a great thing and in the case of the Optimate 2 Duo that’ s certainly so. Over the years I’ ve had several chargers in the workshop, one for the car, one for the bike, another for the lithium tech. This Optimate 2 Duo covers both 12V and 12.8V battery technologies, which means the one unit will charge 12 volt AGM, Gel, Lead Acid, EFB( Enhanced Flooded Battery, used in cars with start / stop systems) as well as 12.8V LFP( shorthand for Lithium Iron Phospate or LiFePO4) and LiFe( Lithium Iron) on the Lithium side( but not Lithium Ion, which is a different beast entirely and found in power tools, among other things). It’ ll cope with Lead Acid technology batteries from 6-96Ah and Lithium from 2-24Ah. Basically, it will cope with everything from road bikes, dirt bikes and a ride-on mower, on up to your Ute or watercraft. Charging from as low as 4 volts it can revive most batteries. Using the Optimate is simple. If the battery is still in the bike / vehicle( for negative earth vehicles- most bikes), connect the positive to the positive battery terminal, then connect the negative to chassis or engine. If the battery is on the bench, connect the positive clip to the positive terminal, then the negative clip to the negative terminal. The Optimate takes it from there, figuring out the battery chemistry and charging the battery accordingly.

You can leave the charger connected long term and it’ ll act as a maintainer / trickle charger, keeping the battery at the right voltage ready to go. The unit comes with two charging leads. One with sprung clips that will connect to any battery terminal size and a second charging lead which can be permanently wired to the battery with a weatherproof cap to keep moisture out of the end, making it easy to plug in if the bike won’ t be used for a while. If you’ ve got more than one bike that needs charging at a time, there are two-charger and four-charger units available too. If you don’ t have a collection of battery chargers, this one will do the lot.
