VdM has a long history with BMW, and was the man Oliveira replaced in the BMW WorldSBK squad but hadn’ t left the fold entirely having joined BMW’ s Endurance World Championship( EWC) team in 2026 so he was a logical choice to fill in during Oliveira’ s absence. Oliveira is still fourth in the championship but with less than ten points covering fourth through eighth( Oliveira, Montella, Alex Lowes, Bautista, Baldassarri), he’ s likely to drop places whilst recovering. The extent of his injuries, which include fractured scapula( shoulder blade), ribs and tendon damage to the shoulder, suggests he might miss two or three rounds.
