Event organiser, and multi NZ Champion, Chris Power, conceived the event after competing in the Husqvarna Three Day last year, deciding he wanted to give back a little to the sport. Alongside Jono and Rowan, he explored the more challenging corners of Maramarua, uncovering terrain that would test even the most experienced riders, ranging from deceptively simple trails to steep farmland climbs, technical native bush sections, exposed tree roots, muddy banks, and more. Honda Park, operated by Power Adventures for over two and a half decades, has traditionally utilised more accessible trails.
Recently, however, it has incorporated demanding features such as Everest, K2, Romaniacs, Erzberg, and Roller Coaster. These Grade 5 sections formed the backbone of The Pines, supplemented by some even more extreme challenges designed to push riders to their limits. A strong field assembled, including stars of Hard, Will Yeoman and Bradley Lauder, both eager to prove their capabilities. Local rider Guy Johnston hoped his familiarity with the terrain would provide an advantage, though he soon discovered that the usual Maramarua trails served merely as transitions between punishing technical sections.
