NZTA ' S SUV SUBVERSION
OK, nobody actually‘ likes’ SUVs but they are hugely popular with the populous as a general use boring box. Not fun in any realm but there you go. Like a paper towel, they are useful. Enter NZTA and its new self-given authority over the speed – sorry – safety cameras here in good old NZ. As soon as the fixed reven … safety cameras were signposted, the number of‘ floating’ speed cameras is set to increase. And with most people viewing a modern van parked discreetly, but never‘ hidden’, with suspicion, there is another change to the rev … safety camera tale. The ubiquitous SUV, a more common vehicle there just isn’ t, is now the weapon of choice for toting around these new cameras. Also joining the fleet will be trailers, so they can be just parked at a convenient spot to do their thing, no human required. And wait, there’ s more … Some of these new cameras work on vehicles travelling in both directions. Yep, a forward and a rearward lens, you can do the math from there. Aaaand, some will be average speed, as in point-to-point enabled, which raises a few legal questions that will be sorted in short order in favour of someone else, not you. These cameras are already being rolled out, so now everyone will like SUVs that little bit less.
