Our rest spot for the night was idyllically located under the hills at Te Araroa Holiday Park. I insisted on a motel room and a hot shower with a couple of huge beds so we could catch up on needed sleep. Last night’ s nylon tent and selfinflating pads gave way to what felt like luxury- couches, beds and sheets. Capping it off was a damn fine steakburger from the camp kitchen, delivered to our room. Great service!
JANUARY 13 For the entire North Island leg Lance’ s bike had been leaking petrol from a faulty fuel pump, not apparent unless under load, and when following him the smell of fresh petrol was very strong. Where I was averaging 4.5 litres per 100km, he was using 7.5, and I breathed in half of that. I led a lot of the time for that reason. Today was the penultimate of the trip. It was
