patterns and logo stitched into the surface, but after an hour’ s spirited riding it became very firm indeed, and I was eager to get off as soon as possible. It’ s also rather low at 795mm and there’ s an option to get a higher seat, at 820mm, and I’ d certainly prefer that; for longer rides it’ d be first on the list. Also in the“ maybe it’ s just me” column – holding a set speed, without the cruise control, I found the ride-by-wire system felt a little snatchy and unsettled- hunting- although accel and decel were smooth enough. I was in Sport config and I suspect it might be better in Road. Additionally, its not really a pillion bike in my view, the rear seat is a mere nod to actual accommodation,( although a 7-year-old son or daughter might fit) – so as a naked sports bike, I think I’ d remove the rear pegs, and get clear sight of the classy art work in that rear pipe, although the footpeg mounts themselves would give protection to the rear in the event of a drop and make good strapping points for luggage.
THE SKINNY In truly personal vein, I prefer the power, and
even the weight of a bigger bike, 1000cc or more, but the days are coming when I don’ t want to have that pressure in my legs, knees and hips. Something lighter, lower, more nimble and with nearly as much fire and grunt would be a serious contender. This 800cc unit is punchy, powerful, and fiery when asked, it’ s a real treat to hear it open up and watch the k’ s whizz by. Time will tell whether the CFMOTO package will have longevity and value- the only real unknown issues- but given the quality of the offering to date, I see no reason to doubt its worth. And speaking of worth, at $ 13,490 at present prices, this would have to be arguably the best motorcycle for money package seen in this country for – well forever, frankly. As I said at the start, its got everything and the price is right, the brand is on a rising trajectory, and sometimes we just need to realise that the old days belong there, in the past. The Black Cat beckons, you up for a little oriental bewitching?
