SECOND OPINION
I
have to admit I was looking forward
to riding the V-Strom 250 after
a first glace. A smaller version
of its bigger brothers, it definitely
looks very ‘adventurey’, and I was
initially impressed by its chiselled
good looks and shiny paintwork.
Sadly, the adventurous looks aren’t fully
backed up in the engine department
and, admittedly, whilst I didn’t use the
V-Strom for adventure riding, I did
try to imagine how the bike would
perform off-road or on gravel. So from
an experienced (but not expert) rider
point of view, the bottom end just isn’t
quite there for me and it could do with
a bit more power generally through
the whole range. That’s just with
172cm me on board, so don’t expect
scintillating performance with it fully
kitted out with weekend touring gear.
Then again, this IS only 250 and it does
hum along nicely when up to speed.
Engine power aside, the V-Strom is well
suited to commuting and I appreciated
the upright riding position on my
daily run to work. Its low seat height
and lightweight body also definitely
allow you to ride with confidence. It’s
comfortable, smooth, agile through
traffic and the fuel consumption will
definitely save you a fair few cents
even if your riding is ‘brisk’. I’m sure
someone who hasn’t been riding
quite as long would enjoy riding the
Suzuki 250. I think the V-Strom 250
is very well-suited to city life and if
you’re thinking of a commuter with
adventure looks then I’d definitely tell
you to give it a go. ~EVE LAWRENCE
