thumbed the starter and the big single burst into life. The big piston, about the size of a Milo tin, thumping away was music to my ears!
THE FIRST SCRAMBLER IN NZ It was time for my very first ride on the BSA Scrambler 650 that I’ d not even test ridden, and the very first Scrambler to hit New Zealand roads. With threatening skies, dark clouds and wet roads, with new Pirelli Scorpion tyres, 17-inch on the rear and 19- inch up front, I didn’ t get very far before having to take refuge at the Ōakura gas station as a heavy, sideways, Taranaki shower zeroed in on me. I thought‘ Bugger this, I’ ll wait for a day where the sun reappears’ and quietly meandered back home via Back Beach, where I copped another downpour.
