success of this engine more emphatically than
the famous one-two victory at the Imola 200 with
riders Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari in 1972.
The Ducati 750 Sport came onto the market 1973,
but many believe the ground-breaking model
arrived in 1974 when the 750 Desmo Super Sport was
hailed the most significant motorcycle design of its
time. That may be so, but the 750 Sport maintained
a strong following. As always seems to happen, the
Super Sport grew in engine capacity and became
the 900SS in 1977, a model which became a favourite
with collectors, and the basis for Mike Hailwood’s
sensational victory in the Isle of Man F1 race in 1978.
Alas, it would signal the end of the line for the
expensive to produce bevel driven engines. The last
bevel g ear model was the Hailwood Replica known
as the MHR Mille. In 1979 Taglioni designed the
Pantah, originator of the Ducati family of models
with a belt-driven top end. For anyone serious
about restoration or finding out more, author
Ian Falloon has written several books, in great
detail, on all the models mentioned.
