LEVEL PLAYING FIELD
Levels Raceway in Timaru saw the second round of the NZSBK Championship entertain a crowd that was bigger than has been seen for some time , helped by great weather and the prospect of great racing in a range of classes that meant something for everyone . In the Superbike class , Mitch Rees scored a 1-2 for his efforts , taking the day after Dale Finch took the win on a damp track on the Saturday . With Finch edging him , will Al Hoogie , Rogan Chandler and even Mitch ’ s father , Tony , back themselves to edge him as the season continues ? You can bet they ’ ll try … The 600s are always entertaining and Round two didn ’ t disappoint . Jake Lewis kept his title hopes alive , winning the round , although his much better half , Avalon , racing and winning the ProTwins class actually has one more point in the bag … They both have a TT title to their names as well , so the battle for bragging rights in the
Lewis house continues . The sidecar battle resumes , with Barry Smith and Stu Dawe returning in a borrowed machine after an excursion last round and making series leaders , Philli Law and Angus Ravenwood , work hard to stop a clean sweep by pipping them in one session . Superlites saw Karl Hooper emerge with the series lead in a hard to pick class that goes to the wire each race of every round . Luke Ryder retains his perfect scorecard in the SuperTwin class on his Aprilia 660 and proved he will be hard to catch at any track . The smaller capacity classes , as in the Supersport 300 and 150 grids , are too close to call with a number of riders showing the ability to win . The crowd love watching the smaller bikes going elbow-to-elbow almost anywhere on the track , making for great spectator sport and maybe enticing more riders to have a go at racing .
