THE ADELAIDE SAGA
Just pivoting across to MotoGP and the saga of the Australian GP moving to Adelaide before we close, Alex Marquez awful crash at the Catalunya GP has once again highlighted that bikes can actually crash violently on the straights and it’ s not just corners that need to provide adequate protection. How the new semi-street circuit proposed for Australian MotoGP round in 2027 will meet these challenges is yet to be announced but the designer of the F1 GP circuit on which the MotoGP will be based, Bob Bernard, has chucked out a figure of AU $ 100m as being the sort of money that will be required to make the track MotoGP suitable. Those numbers have been rejected by representatives of the agencies who are tasked with getting the track ready but it’ s safe to say that there’ s going to be a lot of noise in the media about Australian GP 2027 before there’ s any noise on the track. WorldSBK’ s future in Australia is still up in the air with 2027 being the last year of PI’ s contract to hold the race and let’ s not forget that Australia is, for 2026, the only non-European round and you’ d have to think Liberty Media could perhaps feel that losing Australia wouldn’ t be the end of the world. Others may feel differently.
