cruising at motorway speeds. But more on that soon. Physically, the DR-Z4S has changed quite nicely. The steel handlebars of old have been replaced with proper alloy bars, which feel comfortable while giving more control. It felt superb when standing up as well as tucking right down to pass traffic quickly. New bodywork has that modern edge, looking pretty tough wherever it’ s parked up. I think the lines on this bike look great. Suzuki did a good job with the headlight, it’ s actually bright with a decent beam pattern, other road users will be hard-pressed to not see you on the road, and that works well at night.
untouched. It is still configured with a 398cc water-cooled single cylinder motor, but offering an enhanced experience with its new S. I. R. S.( Suzuki Intelligent Ride System) Suite. It has so much going for it now( and this is totally open to debate between riders new to the platform and fans of the original DR-Z400E), adjustable traction control, throttle maps, and switchable ABS. There are two modes, A and B, as well as four options for adjusting traction control on the fly, for ease of use between gravel road hoons and commuting through town. As much as everyone was hoping for a sixspeed gearbox, you’ ll have to keep waiting and wishing. The DR-Z4S retains a five-speed transmission. Albeit with amended gear ratios. The gearing feels a bit taller than before, helping
FIRST IMPRESSIONS My initial riding for this bike was around the streets of Hamilton during my daily commute. The biggest surprise, after riding cheaper alternatives to the 4S, was the fuelling. It is so clean and smooth right off the very bottom of the throttle. Especially with new emissions regulation, lots of bikes have become harsh, choppy and susceptible to low-speed surging. The 4S is so easy to ride, you can run it in A Mode easily( that’ s the more aggressive throttle mode). Suzuki has also introduced its SCAS( Suzuki Clutch Assist System), which makes the clutch lever pull feel very light. As well as the slipper clutch working like an absolute charm, not once did I have any rear tyre skipping or lock up. Lanesplitting, blasting around town and setting off through multiple traffic lights is very easy, this system would really suit new riders and actually makes for an easy ride. Brakes, suspension and overall handling are outstanding. I hardly felt any intrusion from the ABS System, the fully adjustable KYB suspension took no time to properly dial in and find that sweet, sweet feeling before I took it on the KR350 adventure ride.
RIDING THE KR350 My ride down to Taumaranui for the KR350 was surprisingly comfortable. It was my first time attending an organised event like this, which was
