This test bike didn ’ t come via the usual route to us . KR readers will probably know Zak Fuller from the magazine as a dirt racer who ’ s found a love for road racing , and is now very , very handy at it . Well , Zak took delivery of a brand new KTM 250XC-F and asked if we ’ d like to test it . He ’ s a good bugger . Not only did he let us ride it , he also took it home filthy after a very damp test session . Top man , KR salutes you ! So , thanks out of the way , let ’ s dive into the bike .
ALL CHANGE This 250XC-F is virtually all new from the ground up – new engine , frame , sub-frame , suspension , and bodywork . The 40.5hp engine has multiple improvements to deliver more torque and is relocated in the frame for less suspension squat
under power . It has a 44mm throttle body , can rev to 14,000rpm , has a six-speed gearbox , two power modes and Traction and Launch control . That ’ s a big update .
RIDING Straight away the 250XC-F is aggressive , fast , and light with plush suspension action . The two power modes are indicated by a white light ( top button ) and a green light ( bottom button ). White has slightly milder power than Green , which is the full noise option . Straight away I noticed the power delivery is snatchy going from closed to open throttle from low revs , I ’ m sure the high 14.6:1 compression ratio contributes towards this . The upside here is there is excellent throttle response everywhere else in the rev range . The downside is flywheel effect feels minimal , particularly below one quarter throttle making it quite easy to stall at low revs . However , careful throttle use - a delicate right hand in other words - means it can be lugged to some extent in the tight going , but a heavy throttle hand isn ’ t going to make things easy for you at low speeds .
