FITTING THE NEW FILTER

FITTING THE NEW FILTER

• Take the new filter and dip your( gloved) finger into the new oil and run it around the o-ring. If your filter goes in vertically, fill it up with the fresh oil.
• Get a clean rag and, once the oil has stopped draining from the bike, give the area on the bike wipe where the filter seals with the filter, and the sump plug’ s mating edge. Refit the sump plug, torque it to the handbook specification. Overtightening will lead to a big repair bill.
• By hand, thread the filter on until it just makes contact with the engine case. Still by hand, turn it another 1 / 2 to 3 / 4 of a turn. If you are really struggling to get it any tighter with your hands, it should be tight enough. Tool fastener surfaces on external filters are for undoing the filter NOT tightening it up. Internal filters will have a torque setting in the manual.
• Pour the correct amount of oil into your clean jug, remembering to allow for any you may have put in the filter in the previous step. There are usually two figures quoted, one for an oil change with a new oil filter and one without.
• Clean the filler cap and screw it back on. Start your bike up and allow it to idle, the oil needs to circulate back around. After a minute or so turn it off. Check for leaks around the plug and filter.
• Check the oil level is correct and refit any bodywork. You’ re done!
