Glen Leyston is a lifelong passionate motorcyclist . An all-round rider , racer , mechanic and , in recent years , a highly qualified motorcycle trainer . He can take you for your restricted and full road licence testing , as well basic learner skills to get you up and running prior to tackling your restricted . He covers the bases . I met up with Glen northwest of Helensville at an offroad skills training day for adventure riders . the tools he carries and why he carries them . He stressed the importance of having a light weight but functional kit and not carrying too much ; it ’ s about getting yourself home without the burden of carrying half your tool shed - so you don ’ t compromise your ride enjoyment . As an old enduro guy , I think these are words to live by . Glen next gave a run down on how to set a bike up , covering things like handlebar , lever and pedal positioning and the reasoning why ( tall guys need higher bars for greater control and comfort , while short riders should go for lower seats , etc ). The skills part started with Glen clearly demonstrating rider position for each manoeuvre around the rolling paddock and then the students went out and practised it for themselves – they seemed to be clearly enjoying it and taking the information in . Glen is an approachable and friendly bloke and clearly very enthusiastic about helping riders at all levels improve their skills . Many of the riders I spoke to had been along to one or more of Glen ’ s courses before and that ’ s why they were back for more . Is there a better recommendation than that ? I doubt it .
