THE BIKE
The Honda CRF 300F proved to be exceptionally capable in Vietnam ’ s challenging terrain . The F is lighter than the rally model , and perfectly suited for the varied road conditions and offroad sections , from slippery jungle tracks to steep , rocky paths . With long-travel suspension , predictable handling , and low gearing for crawling through tough spots , the bike handled everything from smooth highways to the roughest off-roading . Its reliability and versatility were invaluable throughout the journey , making it an ideal choice for an adventure like this , and it survived many unintended encounters with ground and gravity . In Vietnam smaller bikes dominate the roads ;
Above : This example of steep , downhill boundering was beyond me so the guide had to help – and sometimes the locals had to save us ( left ). Below : The homestays were charming with delicious food .
so our ‘ big bikes ’ garnered much admiration . Honda reigns supreme in Vietnam , with probably 90 % of all motorcycles on the road . It is the undisputed king of the country ’ s vibrant two-wheeler culture , and spare parts are plentiful and cheap . Maybe I was particularly fortunate but when I discussed my upcoming trip with Honda New Zealand , they offered me the opportunity to familiarise myself with the bike . Not only that but it coincided with an excellent training session with PowerAdventures - look them up .
