TIPS FOR VIETNAM

Far steeper than it looks , this was anything but easy .
GEAR UP Choosing the right gear is essential , opt for a lightweight , breathable setup with solid protection . Full-height boots , proper body armour , and multiple glove options are a must to handle both the rough terrain and the heat . Take options .
MANAGE HEAT AND HYDRATION The intense heat and humidity of Vietnam can be overwhelming , especially in peak summer months . Wearing heavy gear can cause fatigue and weakness , making it harder to control the bike . Stay hydrated all day with ice-filled hydration packs and consider travelling during the shoulder seasons for more manageable weather .
TRAVEL IN A GROUP Group dynamics are crucial on such challenging trips . Travelling with a group of six to eight riders offers more social interaction , support , and help during difficult sections .
RIDE YOUR OWN PACE Trying to keep up with faster or more experienced riders can lead to accidents or injuries . Riding at your own pace is vital for safety and enjoyment , particularly on demanding off-road sections .
BE REALISTIC The adventure was far more difficult than I anticipated . Marketing materials often showcase the highlights without showing the truly challenging parts . It ’ s essential to have a realistic understanding of your skills and to reach out to the tour operator to ensure the trip matches your capabilities .
SUPPORT Having a support truck to carry gear and spares was invaluable . It was a literal lifesaver at times . However , always keep valuables like your wallet and passport on you , as unexpected issues like landslides can separate you from the truck .
TIPPING Tipping is expected even in remote areas , so keep cash handy . Around half a million Vietnamese Dong per day ( about $ 40 NZD ) is a good amount to have on hand for tips and unexpected expenses .
