A break to take in the view on a typical trail
The real challenge started when the paths turned into gravel and eventually into jungle tracks . On the first day , I quickly realised I was in over my head when we encountered the roughest , steepest terrain I had ever seen . We had to rely on our guide , and some locals to help carry the bikes through the toughest patches . The Vietnamese people are tough and helpful , and seemingly appeared out of nowhere to assist as needed . By the end of day one , I was exhausted , both physically and mentally , having realised how challenging the adventure would be .
INTO THE JUNGLE The next few days took us deeper into the jungle and higher into the mountains along the Chinese border . We battled through dense forests , slippery paths , and landslides . Some days were so intense that we were carrying bikes through the jungle , pushing through deep mud or under fallen trees . One rainstorm that caused such intense landslides and flooding that we were the only ones who could make it through , thanks to our exceptionally capable bikes , and probably flawed perception of our own ability . This was tough going and after a few days I
learnt to ride at my own pace rather than trying to keep up with the more experienced riders . This change in approach , coupled with the guide ’ s adjusted routes , made the journey more manageable .
STUNNING LANDSCAPES Ha Giang Loop is a must for any motorcyclist in Vietnam . The roads are perfect for riding , with incredible endless switchbacks through dramatic landscapes . The weather didn ’ t cooperate and clouds often obscured the stunning views . Still , the thrill of riding these roads on the best bike for the job made it worthwhile . Vietnam is truly a motorbike country . Cars are rare due to very high import taxes ; nearly everyone is on a scooter or small bike . Our big bikes made us quite the spectacle and earned us nods of approval wherever we went .
RIVER CROSSINGS AND HOMESTAYS Our journey continued with river crossings on barges and riding along paths which often disappeared into the jungle or a river . One of the most enjoyable experiences was arriving at a homestay overlooking Vietnam ’ s largest lake . Swimming in the lake and relaxing with a view were well-deserved rewards for days
