front is not overly impressive in today’s world.
Having said that, as a LAMS machine, stronger
brakes are probably unnecessary and possibly
even unhelpful for those getting to grips with
squeezing a lever to stop. But ABS is there too,
so overall the brakes are more than competent.
As an overall ride I think the Kawasaki Z650 is a
great bike. I was very taken with its big brother,
the all-new Z900, and this 650 is the perfect
stepping stone if you wanted to graduate on to
the bigger four-cylinder machine, but it’s a still
great machine in its own right. The 650 is capable
of decent trips too, although the 15-litre tank
will reduce distance between fills, but because
of its frugal consumption there’s still a decent
range... certainly further than I like to go without
a break. For the commuter and daily rider its
willing engine, general manners and comfort
will win friends no matter how accomplished
the rider is. The dash is a simple minimalist-
looking thing in keeping with the naked look,
but it has all the usual information and warning
lights common in today’s world. Kawasaki has
done an excellent job with this bike. The fit and
finish is terrific and it’s a handsome beast too.
LAMS riders, in particular, should be tracking
down their nearest dealer for a test ride.
