Kawasaki has an enviable reputation for building reliable engines with engaging and exciting power deliveries, especially with the company’s inline fours. Thankfully, this twin cylinder Double Over-Head Camshaft motor is a gem too. LAMS riders benefit from a smooth, torquey engine that has decent grunt when the need arises. Conversely, it also needs to be one that doesn’t bite with an abrupt or aggressive power delivery. Other desirable traits in an engine for learners include the unwillingness to stall at the lights on takeoff, or to burst in to sudden wheel spin on a damp patch – in essence an engine that looks after its rider. Of course, meeting these requisites doesn’t have to mean a boring engine, and the Z650 strikes an excellent balance between user friendliness and rider excitement. Engine power is rated at 50.2 kW @ 8000rpm and 65.7Nm @ 6700rpm with the emphasis on strong low to mid-range torque, everyday versatility and all with more than a hint of performance.
