New Zealand’ s motorcycling culture is about to get a major boost. The legend that is the Britten and the man whose dream it was, John Britten, will, from February 2026 onwards, have a dedicated museum display. That display will be at a purpose-designed, permanent and interactive tribute to one of – ok, THE greatest motorcycle of all time( no, I have yet to ride one, sigh). The man behind this richly deserved tribute is none other than Mike Pero. Mike is a six-time National Championship winner and a collector of motorcycles, as well as being the man behind several businesses that still utilise his name after being sold. Referring to himself as fortunate to be in a position to help get the concept up and running, it is his way of giving back to the motorcycling community that he has been heavily involved with his entire life. This fantastic new‘ must see’ slice of Kiwiana Culture is to be in central Christchurch, opposite the Bridge Of Remembrance and a few steps from Riverside Market and Cashel Mall, the perfect place to meet before, during or after a ride. Pero is personally funding the project through a notfor-profit trust, to ensure John Britten’ s vision and achievements are preserved, displayed and explained for future generations. The museum will give visitors a 60-90minute journey through John Britten’ s life, from early design projects to international motorcycle racing success and the legacy that continues. There will be a boutique cinema with immersive audio-visual story-telling, interactive workshops and Motorcycles, components and archival material from his family and team. Access for motorcyclists travelling will be easy with its‘ open seven days programme’, making it a unique Kiwi destination for anybody, any day. Pero reflects;“ John demanded excellence in everything he did. He proved that with vision and perseverance, Kiwis can take on the world- and win. I believe John was New Zealand’ s answer to Leonardo da Vinci – he was well ahead of his time. And, while it may have taken more than 30 years for us to get to this point of establishing a remembrance museum, I am so proud to have the resources and support from the family and the team to do this.” Surely, this will be a pilgrimage destination for motorcycle fans the world over. Make the journey..
