Woodhill Forest is a sand based forest in north Auckland, which has, for a very long time, been a favourite for locals and out of towners and one of the only places that has consistently had off-road motorcycle events in the wider Auckland region. Now, I know what you Southerners are saying about Aucklanders but I can assure you there was not a latte in sight, let alone a double frappe-lappa-mocha with oat milk. The first round of the series was held on a damp Sunday in July, the turn out was outstanding and clearly the word was getting around that this event was running at full steam with fresh tracks and pruned trees, thanks to some fantastic social media-divaship from Jono Hill getting the word out.
THAT BOY AIN’ T RIGHT The Forest floor was damp and fresh, the racing was fast and furious and the laughter and general banter was on form. The juniors set off at 9.00am and had the pleasure of a fresh track. They cut it up pretty good, making for a tough first half a lap for the seniors who rode later. The Senior race was away at 12 and I can tell you first hand that it was a blast, with fast and flowing trails and some first class pruning really making for a great track. Ryan Hayward put on a master class and I can safely say, after seeing his riding first hand,“ That boy ain’ t right”. It was outstanding to see such a large field and so many out-of-towners making the effort to come along. The next round is in an area very different from the first round and will provide for some excellent racing.
