What you need to know about... Oil
Using the right type of oil is crucial for your engine, but there’ s still confusion surrounding the black gold. Here’ s what you need to know...
WHAT TYPES OF OIL ARE THERE? The formulation of most lubricants consists of the base oil and the additive system. The base oil can be synthetic, semi-synthetic, mineral or vegetable based. The type of base oil chosen will depend on its application, e. g. for use in cold temperatures, hot temperatures, where biodegradability is required, differing pressures, etc. Synthetics are at the high performance end of the spectrum for extreme conditions, with mineral oils being used for a lot of general, less severe applications. Additives( the chemistry part) are then added to produce the performance required depending on the application, e. g. engines, gearboxes, suspensions, chains, etc.
WHAT OIL SHOULD I USE IN MY BIKE? Always follow the guidelines laid out in the manufacturer’ s operating manual. This will ensure proper protection and component life.
