The almost leafless oak tree grove is strobing low winter sunlight into my helmet and the fourth or fifth one-lanebridge looms with an offset kink at the entrance, I push down twice on the gear lever, open the gateway angle and twist a little throttle on, the warm Diablo Supercorsa explodes loose chip out the back with fierce, yet creamy power, singing an engine note like Pavarotti in‘ Nessun Dorma’. I’ m back on board a modern iteration of my former favourite bike. My very own Speed Triple was a 2017 model, and the intervening eight years have been transformative. Admittedly, mine was several iterations back with a 1050cc engine; the 1200( 1160cc engine) was introduced in 2021 with the 1200RS triple- and now, four years, later Triumph has delivered something remarkable. Again. Altogether more powerful, more refined and much more versatile, the British brand’ s new 1200RS is a totem for sport bikes. Raw numbers point the way, but only hint at the magic to come. Three inline cylinders across the frame, 1160cc, 12 valves, 180.5 horsepower, 128Nm of

torque. All set in a curvaceous aluminium twin spar frame, coming in at a kilo under 200kg. Wet. Wow. Take a breath.
LEADING EDGE. INVIGORATING. First introduced in 1994, the Speed triple has been a major contributor to Triumph’ s success for thirty years; always leading edge and fiery, they forge loyalty, and there are forums galore for owners the world over. A Speed Triple in the garage is a testament to human vitality – just my own opinion of course- and a new one is incredibly invigorating. Roads I’ ve travelled hundreds of times are suddenly fresh and thrilling again. And most of this enthusiasm comes down to the level and quality of the tech aboard this new‘ speedie’. It looks distinctly the same, familial, and yet, so much more. Again, words describe the offerings but it’ s the manner and‘ connectedness’ of this in the ride quality and tech that has delivered something that, IMHO, breaks the ceiling.
