ABSOLUTE LANDSPEED NEW ZEALAND RECORD SMASHED
WORDS / PHOTO: Todd Sutherland
Northland’ s Patric Nussbaum managed a two way average speed of 380.018 km / h at the annual New Zealand Landspeed Association on Goudies Road near Reporoa on March 21. Most know that if you want to go fast, Suzuki ' s Hayabusa is a decent place to start from. And so it was, for the second year running, Patric Nussbaum and his turbocharged Hayabusa were the fastest bike at the annual Landspeed New Zealand Association run in the central north island. The difference this year was that Nussbaum managed to not only beat Cole Scammell ' s previous record( also set on a turbocharged Hayabusa), but also record a speed faster than any other ground driven vehicle in New Zealand records. A few different groups have held speed runs over the years, and Land Speed New Zealand( association) doesn’ t claim to be the only group, but President John Seccombe and his group of helpers seem to have been the most consistent in the last few years. In 2022, Motorcycling New Zealand( MNZ) ratified two records set at Seccombe’ s Land Speed New Zealand event. First the( MNZ) Motorcycle 1050cc fuel class record set by Scott Wilkins on a modifed Kawasaki H2R 998cc( supercharged). This took the record to 364.5 km / h. Secondly, Walter Rands-Trevor on his modified Kawasaki ZX-10R 1000cc, setting the( MNZ) NZ flying 1050cc Flying ¼ mile normally
aspirated( no turbo or supercharger) record at 323.535 km / h. Nussbaum and Scammell have since eclipsed Wilkins ' record. Rands-Trevor ' s record remains unbeaten. Keep an eye out for the event next year on the Landspeed New Zealand Association Facebook page. Perhaps Miles Purchases’ helicopter engine jet powered bike will return to add to the host of very interesting machines.
