DIRT NEWS

THE COENENS CAN

BIRMINGHAM ALABAMA MX2 GOES GREEN

While a certain red Honda dominated the

MXGP class in Birmingham, it was all about the green machines in the 250 fray aka SMX Next- Vincent Wey did it his way. It was his first victory in the class and he did it in some style. Wey scored the holeshot and simply rode away from the chasing field. Clearly having the race of his career so far, his lead just kept going out, lap after lap. The hard work paying off, it was a milestone race for Wey and sees him gain faith in his natural speed and combined with the countless hours on the bike, sets him up for more. Wey was followed home by teammate Kade Johnson to give Kawasaki the 1-2. As always, the 250 lads entertained the crowds. For some of the newer competitors, there is everything to prove and there is just nothing held back. It makes for great racing and you could pick out the senior team staff out watching as the latest batch of guns take to the track. Important eyes are always watching the smaller capacity class with an eye on the near future and there is no shortage of riders putting themselves into view of the big teams.

The Coenen brothers won both MXGP and

MX2 heats building up to the main event in Spain, so all eyes were on the siblings when the
gates dropped in the main event. While Sasha had a solid weekend, securing third overall, despite arm pump issues, it was Lucas who had the day of days. Winning his qualification heat, the Belgian rider was supreme in the sand of Almonte, Andalucia in Spain. Following up in the main events, his speed in the deep sandy conditions had him in a class of his own. In the final race, he cruised across the line fourteen seconds clear. In fact, he looked in control the entire weekend. Adding to the buzz of his first overall win of the season, his consistent form sees him lead the standings. Jeffrey Herlings had the speed to challenge but a first corner crash took him out of the fight. Picking himself off the deck and dead last, he passed nineteen riders to finish a single place off a point scoring ride. Eleventh was the best he could get from that race but he sure is fast … Meanwhile, Sasha Coenen had a heat win in MX2, a seventh place, hindered with arm pump in Race 1and then came back strongly with a second and a third. The form of the Belgian bros has tongues wagging about the possibility of them both being in the MXGP lineup soon. Now, that would be cool to see.
