From organising and running trail rides to side-by-side and 4WD events all on Defence Force land in the name of charity , it is a cruel blow to see the OffLimits Trust officially shut its doors for good . After last year ’ s announcement that the organiser of some of the best trail rides in the nation was going into hibernation following a tough couple of years , it has been announced that this has become a permanent closure . That means we have seen our last Tussock Buster and Boundary Buster rides . On March 20th 2022 , the OffLimits Trust officially announced its permanent closure citing lack of access to NZDF land and Covid-19 as significant factors in the decision . Access to the Defence Force land near Waiouru was already limited following the March 15 terrorist attack on Mosques in Christchurch , with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic adding further difficulties thanks to limited ability to hold large events - the bread and butter of the OffLimits Trust . While theoretically OffLimits could have run events elsewhere in the North Island , the usually off-limits NZDF land was a huge part of what made the Trust ’ s events stand out from the crowd . “ It is with great sadness that we must say farewell to all those who have been loyal supporters of the OffLimits Trust over the years ,” the Trust posted on its official Facebook page . “ We are yet another casualty of Covid-19 . We cannot sustain the costs of staying in limbo and not being able to raise funds via the sort of events we have historically undertaken . “ The Trust has sat dormant for the last few years as a result of Covid-19 plus prior to that , the Christchurch mosque attacks and the closure of Waiouru due to increased security levels . “ It is highly unlikely the Trust can gain access back into Waiouru in the next few years as the utilisation of the training area by the NZ Army will result in [ no land being made ] available for non-military activities . “ We thank our wonderful team of helpers and all those who have attended the events we have run at Waiouru . Your support has been greatly appreciated and without it , we would not have been able to raise the money we have over the years to assist members of the New Zealand Defence Force .”
