FOR people like ' Happy ' Bert Day , crashing was not a new concept .
He had been perfecting the art of leaving the relative comfort of his race bike ' s squab seat for the notso-relative comfort of sand traps , tyre barriers and straw-baled walls for years and years .
He spent more time picking up his bike from some trackside grave than he did handing it over to his mechanics at the end of a race .
The lad had ability but he also had a brain which shuffled itself like a pack of cards at the most inappropriate moments .
He would be five or six seconds out in front and attaching eight tenths of a second to his lead every time he passed the start-finish line with only two laps to go when the genetic fault in his chromosomes would emerge .
He would begin to worry ... but not about the pursuing pack so far behind him , nor about whether the engine would last the distance . He worried about his kitchen . A knotting , unsettling sensation deep inside his stomach would spill over into his brain . Bert Day would be bound up by an uncomfortable feeling that he had left the gas on .
