There were two friends there in the octagonal room that has seen decades of music, life, and conviviality. The dogs, horses, chickens and roosters, along with the musos, were in great form, as they were creating a song. I rather cheekily gave them a name for it- and hope they weren’ t offended. Further wandering through superb roads on the West Bank of the Motueka river passing by where I fished a couple of days back, ended up by the Baton Bridge. Ross led us home past the Neudorf winery and Estate that 50 years ago was home to the Famagusta Commune. The roads again defy description, suffice to say I was delirious with happiness. We parted, him to paradise and me to dinner. The South was remarkable even if I did not achieve the desired aim, there are still thousands of kilometres to be discovered and ridden. The deep south of the Catlins and Mitre Peak, the Rainbow and Molesworth stay at the top of the next trip’ s agenda. I have to say a somewhat inadequate thanks to the South Island and my incredible friends, who made every day’ s end a complete joy rounded off. Tomorrow, Rai Valley, Queen Charlotte and the ferry to Wellington.
