Keeping it on the pipe was effortless in
the sand at the Sandpit Bike Park - it is
genuinely a gutsy, strong engine. A far
cry from the pre-power valve, light-switch
125cc motors of my youth. The ergos and
the modern feel impress – it feels like a
great chassis despite its age. I can see why
Yamaha has not rushed to change it. Even
with the large IMS tank the 125 is narrow
up front and to my mind felt better than
Yamaha’s somewhat bulky feeling four-
strokes. Yes, it’s got a decent riding position.
The suspension was soft for me, certainly
compliant, but still reasonably progressive
considering I’m 25kg or more heavier than
Richard. Richard rated his suspension well
but has since gone a little firmer than when
we tested the bike and is now reportedly
very happy. The great results he’s been
getting suggest that’s the case too.
Overall this is a great machine and
absolutely competitive. It is light, great
handling, easy and comfortable to ride
fast, and is fast. Really, it’s a remarkable
testament to Yamaha’s design team from all
those years ago.
