Maximus Purvis topped the podium in the Development (MXD, under-19) class at double- header rounds three and four of the Australian Motocross Championships at Wonthaggi, in Victoria, and then backed that up with another overall win at round five in Murray Bridge, in South Australia, a week later. The 17-year-old posted identical 2-1 score-cards on both days at Wonthaggi, on both occasions sharing the wins with Australian Bailey Malkiewicz, and in both instances Purvis was declared overall winner because of the count-back rule. Coupled with his back-to-back race wins at Murray Bridge on May 27, Purvis has now risen from eighth after round two to third overall after five rounds. In the United States, multi-time New Zealand MX1 motocross champion Cody Cooper, from Mount Maunganui, kicked off his US nationals campaign with a solid 12-15 score-card in his two races at round one in California and then JAMES SCOTT CODY COOPER finished the day tenth overall at round two in San Bernadino (thanks to a 16-10 score-card) on May 26. Eyes have also been on Mount Maunganui’s Rhys Carter, Mangakino’s Kayne Lamont and West Auckland’s Hamish Harwood, all racing in Australia and featuring among the top 10; Canterbury’s Dylan Walsh finishing 20th overall on his debut in the MX2 (250cc) world championships in Germany; Tauranga’s Josiah Natzke, among the top 10 in the MX2 class at the British Motocross Championships; Oparau’s James Scott, 24th overall at round four of nine in the European 125cc Motocross Championships in Germany, and Howick’s Liam Draper, currently 19th overall (and sixth overall in his 250cc class) after seven of 13 rounds in the Grand National Cross-country Championships in the United States.
