To accurately and fully experience the power delivery, select Dynamic mode and turn the TC off – then twist the throttle and the fun (or fear depending on your constitution) will be instant SECOND OPINION This 2019 model is all about the new engine, otherwise the machine is very similar to the previous model as a riding experience. Straight up this new ‘shift cam’ 1254cc boxer engine is sensational! While the spec sheet only(!) says 100kW (136hp) at 7750rpm, the torque figure of 143 Nm at 6250rpm is definitely in the stump pulling category. As is often the case, the figures seldom truly convey the engine feel and this motor hauls arse. To accurately and fully experience the power delivery, select Dynamic mode and turn the TC off – then twist the throttle and the fun (or fear depending on your constitution) will be instant. First and second gear wheelies are effortless and in third she comes up easily enough if you punch it a little and on crests it simply wants to take off. So, it’s super fun, very responsive, but smooth and torquey in equal measure, offering an effortless flexibility almost second to none. It definitely is one of the most exciting, easy to ride and supremely capable touring engines made – perhaps even top of the class again. All else is damn fine too. Few, if any bikes made can cover all the bases like a big GS – it offers genuine mile-eating-in-comfort capability, very good weather protection, wonderfully adjustable suspension for all manner of loads and pillion configurations, excellent brakes and now an engine that will match superbike riders in real world conditions. It’s a masterpiece. JOCK MCLAUCHLAN KIWI RIDER 71
