enough . The learning curve is smooth , fun and exciting . I ’ m new to this track riding lark , with very little experience and kinda use road riding as my reference . And , as the first few sessions were wet , I just left the Aprilia in Dynamic mode , which has full power and great , but not too intrusive , TC for on road use . For me this setting was excellent . ABS is on all the time and can ’ t be switched off . However , after lunch the track dried out and the pace climbed . Of course , dry track speed levels are substantially higher for those accustomed to it . As an example , I used up to the edge of the tyre and didn ’ t push it when I felt fully laid over . Lars , on the other hand , does push it and is bloody quick . He really lays it over and turned the edges of the 660 ’ s rear 180 / 55 17 tyre to jelly . This is where he found the 660 ’ s TC too intrusive as it cut power when he wanted to drive from the turn in Dynamic mode . A quick change of settings to the anti wheelie mode solved this issue , and it was big smiles when he returned as the 660 was now far more fun at high track speeds . I honestly never noticed the issue – I guess that ’ s the difference between ‘ track fast ’ and slow , and a road rider like me . With more time , we could have explored the even more racy modes of Individual Challenge and Time Attack which allow personalised , truly focused track electronics .
IS IT REALLY ANY GOOD ? So , it ’ s fair to say I think Aprilia ’ s RS660 is an amazing machine , one that is set to dominate the mid-sized sporting twin class . Yes it is very handy on track , but is perhaps an even better every day ride because it is extremely useable and rider friendly with a sensible riding position . One that offers versatility and a great degree of comfort . Combine with that the broad spectrum power modes and safety electronics , and all bases are covered . It ’ s a stunning , cutting edge , mid-sized Italian gem – you really can ’ t go wrong with the RS660 .
