Kiwi Rider November 2023 Vol.1 | Page 103

A rider can ’ t wobble along at 80km / h forever , it was time our long term ES700 got some wind protection .

Comfort when riding longer distances on the ES700 definitely improved after fitting the GasGas Gel Seat a couple of months back , but it did nothing to address the lack of wind protection . Keeping up with the flow of traffic at 100km / h is hard work with all that wind against my upper body . 80km / h is the wind-happy speed on the bright red Spanish machine . So , I started daydreaming of fitting a rally tower ... but quickly woke up when I realised I ’ d need to splash out a minimum of $ 1500 to get one . So ... I went on the hunt for a cheaper alternative . Sadly , GasGas doesn ’ t do a windshield for its ‘ travel ’ bike , which is a bit of a shocker . Both KTM and Husqvarna have a listing on their parts websites for a windshield , neither of which is the correct shape for the ES700 ’ s headlight . I did , however , find one specifically for the GasGas SM700 by Spanish brand Puig ( set up by HRC MotoGP team boss Alberto Puig ). Puig doesn ’ t list one for the ES700 specifically . As the screen is designed for a supermoto it ’ s a little shorter than I ’ d have ideally liked , but I decided to take a punt on it anyway . There ’ s no importer for Puig products in NZ , so I had to order it in from the UK .

FITTING It ’ s pretty simple to fit the Puig windshield . Remove the headlight mask , line up the supplied template on the mask , mark the holes with a marker-pen and drill them . There are three attachment points that are rubber mounted , a selection of spacers to lift it away from the headlight mask and a retainer to hold the brake hose away from the windshield . All pretty easy and took about 30 minutes to do .
